The Branford Community

Branford is located in South Central Connecticut, just 10 minutes from New Haven and an hour from Hartford, the state capital. It is situated between New Haven and the smaller, less commercially developed shoreline towns to the east. The Shore Line East railway system provides easy access to New Haven and Metro North and Amtrak to New York to the south and Boston to the north. Tweed New Haven Regional Airport is just three miles to the west and Bradley International Airport is about an hour north.

With a population of approximately 30,000, Branford is a thriving shoreline community with a strong economic base, low taxes, and excellent schools and municipal services. It is an established, suburban, residential community with a balance of retail, commercial and industrial properties. Established in 1644 and “renovated” in the 1980’s, Branford melds the charm of a New England seacoast village with the convenience of the nearby city of New Haven. Residents are extremely proud of the excellent school system, extensive recreational facilities, state-of-the-art 911 communications center, efficient fire and police departments, and the many other municipal services and programs. One of Branford's greatest assets is the spirit of volunteerism and civic involvement, which provides opportunities for all citizens to work together and make Branford an active, caring community.

Brick walks, reproduction lighting and bench fixtures, and careful landscaping, ensure the town’s center looks well cared for throughout the year. New buildings of quality and thoughtful renovations have helped to preserve the essential character of the town. Branford Center is home to many small stores, restaurants, and coffee houses. The Branford Green has churches as well as the town hall and other government facilities and hosts concerts and other events, such as the annual Branford Festival - each summer, the historic town green is transformed into a festival of crafts, activities, food, live music and much, much more for this popular event.

Branford is an ideal destination for living, business or enjoying the shore, and is also rapidly becoming a dining destination with several nationally recognized restaurants, family eateries, and markets for many ethnic cuisines, from Asian influences to Mexican. Its recreational facilities include several town-maintained parks owned by private foundations. It boasts more than 3,900 acres of open land for recreation and/or athletics, with a 28-mile walking trail circling the town, as well as the Shoreline Greenway Trail from New Haven to Hammonasset Beach State Park passing through the town.

The Town of Branford includes the Thimble Islands and 20 miles of coastline with more than 12 marinas. There are two harbors, the more central Branford Harbor and Stony Creek Harbor on the east end. Neighboring towns are North Branford to the north, Guilford to the east, and East Haven to the west. The main artery through the town is Interstate 95, running along the eastern coast of the United States. US Route 1 runs along the shore and through town.
